Empty legs on private jets

We all know that chartering a private jet can be a very expensive way to travel, but do you know what happens after the flight arrives into its destination airport ?

It has to get back to base, or from where it is to another destination and these flights are known as “empty legs”. So if an aircraft is chartered, say from Dublin to London, the return flight from London can be sold at a lower rate. Alternatively if the same aircraft is needed in Paris, then there will be a lower rate from London to Paris, as that will also be an empty leg.

There are so many advantages to chartering your own aircraft, or taking advantage of an empty leg. For one thing they dont leave only from international airports, so if there is a local small airport closer to your home you can depart from there (assuming the aircraft can land there). The second thing is that you are not subject to scheduled departure times, you leave when it suits you. The third and possibly best thing is that you have your own private aircraft, your choice of food, your choice of drink, a superior inflight service and no rushing on and off the aircraft.

Yes, there are downsides as well, if its a 12 seat aircraft and you are the only one travelling, then you are paying for 12 seats. On the upside, you do get the whole aircraft to yourself. However, if there are 12 people on the aircraft, yes, the cost is still more expensive than a commercial flight, but see all the advantages above.

Even though report after report confirms that you have a bigger chance of contracting covid-19 in a supermarket than on a plane, chartering your own aircraft reduces that possibility even further.
